Before I started One Organized Mama I bought every book I could find on the subject of starting your own professional organizing business. This was around 2010-2011 before I finally took the plunge in the summer of 2012. Not only did I read every book I could find but I researched the authors and sent emails to them asking questions about running a home organizing business.
Guess how many responses I received back?
This has always resonated with me over the years as I grew OOM. I always wondered if they were still in business… or did they really have an actual business?
I then tried to reach out to professional organizers who were operating businesses near and far. I only heard back from ONE who had recently retired with a sweet note that said, “People need you out there. Good luck!”
That was it.
So, I had to just figure this stuff out as I went along. I said “yes” to every job asked of me until I figured out what worked and what didn’t.
There’s no secret on how organizing a space is ACTUALLY done. You start by decluttering, decide what to keep, display your stuff in neat bins, slap on a label, take a photo, and declare in social media land….”THIS IS HOW I LIVE!!” Take your bow, then six months later those labels are peeling off and the container labeled “Cheerios” now holds Coco Puffs.
I’ve certainly been guilty of all the above.
But have you ever asked yourself “Why do I need to be organized?” I mean aren’t really annoying people organized? Like the mom who outshines the rest of us with her Pinterest-perfect soccer snacks…..I mean she like actually cut craft paper to make orange-slice cutouts to place on individual bags of sliced oranges.
Guys, that’s not what organization means to THIS Mama.
Organization is meant to save you TIME. That’s it. It’s a simple process but not an easy one. It certainly gets over-complicated and becomes a source of unfair judgment and comparison.
The process of organization combines tools (these are the items you use to get organized) with techniques (this is how you organize) into 4-Steps:
1. Declutter & Sort (The sorting is often overlooked after the decluttering.)
2. Create A Zone (This is often referred to as “space planning”.)
3. Label & Contain (Don’t run to The Container Store until you’ve done Steps 1 & 2 first!)
4. Teach & Maintain (This is what no one is teaching you. Now that you’ve invested time & money HOW do you keep it organized?!)
If you’re a professional organizer I want you to give your client the gift of creating a system for them that gives them more time.
Well, I’m giving you a sneak peek into how I organize my home, life, and how I organize for my clients.
This sneak peek is the first module I used to train my employees back in the day when I had them. As my focus and business model has changed I want to share them with you. I want to change the home organization industry to focus on community and not solely competition. I have a lot of competition out there than can attest that I DO respond when potential competitors reach out to me. (We’re not building nuclear weapons so why be so secretive?)
Eventually, this module will become the first of a ten module series geared towards professional organizers. But you don’t need to be a professional organizer to buy it. It’s available to anyone.
Click on my PRINTABLES store to download your copy for only $9. (Eventually, the entire Ten Module Program will sell for $199 so this is a REALLY good deal while it lasts!)
Stay tuned for more updates (things are always getting better around here) AND if you know of someone interested in advertising their professional organizing business through our Affiliate program I’d love to share more of my secrets with them!
Send me your questions and thank you for stopping by to see what I have to say!
